A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to arrange lodging after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared lost because a woman noticed me wandering around downtown and wondered whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she suggested I could crash on the floor at her university residence at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering some food: one filled rolls she had from her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe to sleep.

Looking back, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
