British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
