Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace talks continue
Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source said the morning session finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the two sides.
Key Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- Future governance of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of the population desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south, health workers reported.
