Just as bad weather tore through the northern region the prior day, City swept United aside at the their home ground. It was a convincing 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This result marked back-to-back Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their title hopes severely dented.

United’s capability to manage league and European soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the week that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared fatigued throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to make changes with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in comparison, have fewer workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose potent attack played with and tore United open with a excellent opening period performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

Opening Threats

United had a number of forays forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wings but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, controlled the ball, teasing their opposition and trying to pull them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh header of the season.

They added to their advantage with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was able to drive through the midfield from central defence, the play opened up for the hosts. Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who ended above them in the prior term, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to place them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
