Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
