Zohran Mamdani states he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
